I admit I did not notice Charli XCX until 2024, when she suddenly took over the world, invented a new color, redefined a word, and rebranded an entire season. So I wasn’t surprised to hear that she was taking a different direction for her next project - a companion album to Emerald Fennell’s movie adaptation of Wuthering Heights. I figured, not knowing anything about the book, that Fennell was looking for someone with Millennial pop cred to liven up and modernize a stuffy, happy-ending Victorian romance. Like Bridgerton’s instrumental settings of music from Madonna and Ariana Grande.
